Tragedy at Burning Man: Homicide Investigation Launched After Man Found Dead
Authorities in Nevada have opened a homicide investigation after a man was discovered dead at the Burning Man festival in Black Rock City.
According to the Pershing County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred Saturday evening around 9:14 p.m., when a festivalgoer alerted deputies to a man “lying in a pool of blood.” Responding officers quickly arrived at the campsite and found a white adult male on the ground who was clearly deceased.
The area was immediately secured, with assistance from the Washoe County Sheriff’s Forensic Science Division in collecting evidence and processing the scene. Several nearby participants were interviewed, but as of Sunday the investigation remained active. Law enforcement presence in part of the temporary desert “city” was described as “heavy” until the site could be cleared.
“While this appears to be an isolated act, participants should remain aware of their surroundings,” the sheriff’s office noted in a statement.
The victim’s identity has not yet been released, pending examination by the Washoe County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Burning Man organizers confirmed they are cooperating with authorities and announced that three public Wi-Fi hubs have been set up so attendees can contact loved ones.
Officials urged anyone with information to reach out to Investigator Josh Nicholson at the Pershing County Sheriff’s Office via dispatch at 774-273-2641.
Every year, Burning Man draws tens of thousands of people to the Nevada desert, where they build a fully functioning city of art, music, and community—only to dismantle it a week later, leaving no trace behind.
